Doran Chandler’s practice focuses almost exclusively on providing legal services for the entertainment industry, including providing advice regarding all aspects of development, production and distribution of television, film and new media projects. Doran has extensive experience representing clients in relation to complex financings, including treaty (Telefilm) co-productions, CRTC co-ventures, production services arrangements and Canadian-content productions including advising producers in relation to the US & Canadian guilds.
Doran is recognized as one of Canada’s leading entertainment lawyers in the The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory and Who’s Who Legal: Canada (Sports & Entertainment).
Doran has represented a wide variety of clients in all stages of scripted and unscripted film & television productions (motion pictures and series), including Canadian and international producers, US studios, writers, novelists, directors and artists. He also advises clients in relation to production-related music rights and represents clients in relation to the book publishing industry.
Doran is a regular guest lecturer at the University of British Columbia Allard School of Law Entertainment Law class. He has been an instructor of Entertainment Law for the UBC Department of Continuing Studies, a panelist at various industry events and was a former co-chair of the Canadian Bar Association Entertainment Law subsection (Vancouver).
Prior to co-founding Chandler Fogden Lyman, Doran practiced entertainment law with Roberts & Stahl and Davis LLP in Vancouver. In his life before law, Doran toured as a musician with a ’90s folk-rock band but you can still find him playing his piano and accordion at the Canadian Bar Association’s annual ‘Battle of the Bar Bands’. Doran lives in Vancouver with his wife and three boys.
