Profile
David Jol is an entertainment, business, and video game lawyer whose practice spans the full breadth of the entertainment industry: video games, film, television, animation, and digital content creation. This makes David uniquely positioned to advise modern entertainment businesses building franchises and brands that often no longer live in a single format.
In video games, David represents developers and publishers at every scale, from solo and indie devs to AA and AAA studios, as well as a growing roster of Roblox devs building on the platform’s creator economy. He regularly serves as production counsel on domestic and international film and television productions, ranging from independent scripted and unscripted productions to major Hollywood films and series, including a number of projects adapting video games for film and television. He also works with high-level content creators on YouTube, producers creating vertical and short-form productions, and companies exploring the boundaries of artificial intelligence in the entertainment industry.
David is a frequent speaker at film festivals and video game conferences and serves on the board of the Pacific Screenwriting Program.
Prior to his legal career, David studied creative writing at UBC and spent half a decade living and working in various parts of the world: from India/Nepal and Southeast Asia to Central and South America. He brings an array of real-life experience to his legal work that makes him an intuitive problem solver, clever strategist and, perhaps most importantly, a pleasure to work with.
In his free time, David likes to surf, snowboard, camp, canoe, watch and play sports, and, when time permits, read books, watch movies, and play video and board games.
